Sound Signal Player
audio1 prolonged blast every ≤ 2 min(repeats ≤ 2 min)
Rule 35: Sound signals in restricted visibility
In restricted visibility, each vessel status has a specific fog-signal pattern and interval.
Detailed Explanation
In/near restricted visibility, day or night:
(a) Power-driven making way: one prolonged every ≤2 min.
(b) Power-driven underway but stopped/no way: two prolonged with ~2 s between, every ≤2 min.
(c) NUC, RAM, CBD, sailing, fishing, towing/pushing: one prolonged + two short every ≤2 min.
(d) Fishing at anchor and RAM at anchor while working: use (c) instead of anchor signal.
(e) Manned towed vessel (or last of tow): one prolonged + three short every ≤2 min, practicably after towing vessel signal.
(f) Composite pushing unit treated as power-driven vessel, so uses (a)/(b).
(g) Anchored vessel: rapid bell ~5 s every ≤1 min; if ≥100 m, also rapid gong ~5 s aft after bell; may add short-prolonged-short warning.
(h) Aground vessel: anchor bell/gong as required, plus three distinct bell strokes before and after rapid bell; may add suitable whistle signal.
(i) Vessel 12 to <20 m may replace bell signals with other efficient signal every ≤2 min.
(j) Vessel <12 m may replace above signals with other efficient signal every ≤2 min.
(k) Pilot on duty may add identity signal of four short blasts.
Key Points
- Power-driven making way: 1 prolonged every ≤2 min
- Power-driven stopped: 2 prolonged every ≤2 min
- NUC/RAM/Sail/Fishing/Towing: 1 prolonged + 2 short
- At anchor: bell 5s every minute; ≥100m bell forward + gong aft
Examples
- Your power-driven vessel is making way through fog. You sound one prolonged blast at intervals of not more than 2 minutes per Rule 35(a).
- A vessel at anchor in fog rings the bell rapidly for about 5 seconds at intervals of not more than 1 minute per Rule 35(g). Your 110 m tanker also sounds the gong in the after part.
- In restricted visibility you are a sailing vessel underway. You sound one prolonged followed by two short blasts at intervals not exceeding 2 minutes, as prescribed by Rule 35(c).
Common Mistakes
- Sounding one prolonged blast when the vessel is underway but stopped, instead of the correct two prolonged blasts.
- Confusing the fog signal for a vessel engaged in fishing (one prolonged + two short) with that of a NUC vessel.
- Exceeding the maximum two-minute interval between fog signals for a power-driven vessel making way.
